Phil has an eye for details and his knowledge of the contact area makes him one of the worlds best contact coaches. The micro skills which he develops with his knowledge of S&C has been an essential tool in preparing the teams I have worked with Phil.
Phil has the ability to engage and connect with players that helps get the message and skills across. His work ethic, humbleness and approachability makes him a joy to work with and be around. Spending time with Phil creating some of the Combat Conditioning in my early days enhanced my coaching.
I have coached and mentored Phil for over 2 decades, sharing a lot of my philosophies and techniques with him, He has used them to build his own methods using his unique skill sets to establish himself as a world renowned coach.
Phil was a great co coach and mentor to me early in my coaching career, he is not only an excellent rugby coach he has the ability and knowledge to develop and link rugby skills to strength and conditioning and the added ability to get the best out of people.
Working with Phil over the last 20 years has been an incredible experience, we work well together constantly learning off each other. Phil complements my skills sets as he is very creative, detailed and has in-depth knowledge both sides of the ball. He has been an important ingredient wherever I have coached.
Phil was my coach when I played for the England Sevens team and has supported me through my international coaching career too. In that time Phil has been a constant presence in my professional development, with a focus on detail and innovation he brings an enormous energy and passion for coaching and is incredibly generous with his time and resources.
Phil brings passion, intelligence and creativity to everything he does, as a player he pushed me to strive further and see things from different perspectives. As I now transition to coaching he shows an innate ability to become my teammate and guide the way in identifying problems and uncovering solutions
Phil has been a terrific mentor for me as I have transitioned into a head coach role on the international stage. His detail, game understanding and ingenuity has contributed to the way I think about the game and ensured that I am delivering at the level required to help our athletes be successful. He has also been a reliable sounding board as I’ve navigated the challenges of maximizing performance, always willing to listen and contribute to support me to be at my best.
He has taken learnings from successful playing and coaching environments from across the world, and developed his own coaching style, whilst remaining curious with an eagerness to keep learning. Phil’s ability to keep things simple and drive high standards allows for understanding and intensity in sessions. This style of coaching has a direct impact of player and team improvement.
